Vibia
Sabina
83-136 AD
The Roman emperor Hadrian was gay, so his wife, Vibia Sabina, was
only for show. They had no children to continue the dynasty. The
emperor's
(male) secretary, Suetonius, developed an inappropriate relationship
with Sabina and got fired. It was said that Hadrian treated his wife
little better than a slave, and may have driven her to suicide.
